Major Step Towards Enabling Haryana Farmers to Access Carbon Credit Benefits

Major Step Towards Enabling Haryana Farmers to Access Carbon Credit Benefits
14 September 2026 | Office Kisan Chamber of Commerce, Rohtak, Haryana
In a significant move towards promoting climate-smart agriculture and creating new income opportunities for farmers, the Kisan Chamber of Commerce (KCC), in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Value Network Ventures (VNV), organised the inaugural Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on the Haryana Agroforestry Carbon Finance Project on September 14, 2026 at the KCC Office, Rohtak. The consultation brought together farmers, agricultural experts, project partners, and institutional stakeholders to discuss the roadmap for developing a transparent, scalable, and farmer-centric carbon credit programme in Haryana. The consultation follows the tripartite collaboration between KCC, TERI and VNV to develop a carbon project in Haryana.
The discussions focused on sustainable agricultural practices, agroforestry, carbon sequestration, scientific monitoring, project registration, verification mechanisms, and pathways for enabling small and medium farmers to participate in voluntary carbon markets. Participants also deliberated on farmer awareness, field-level data collection, digital monitoring systems, and capacity building required for successful implementation.
KCC General Secretary Calls Carbon Credits a New Economic Opportunity
Addressing the gathering, Shri Suresh Deswal, General Secretary, Kisan Chamber of Commerce, said:
"Carbon credits have the potential to become a new source of sustainable income for Haryana's farmers. Through this partnership, our objective is to ensure that even small and medium farmers can participate in global carbon markets with transparency, scientific support, and institutional guidance. KCC is committed to making carbon finance accessible, practical, and beneficial for every eligible farmer."
He further emphasized that farmer awareness, trust, and capacity building would remain the foundation of the initiative and called upon farmer organizations, FPOs, and agricultural institutions to work collectively towards building a robust carbon ecosystem in the state.
TERI Highlights Scientific Credibility
Dr. J V Sharma, Senior Director from TERI said:
"A credible carbon credit programme depends on rigorous science, robust Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), and continuous stakeholder engagement. Our role is to ensure that internationally accepted methodologies are implemented so that farmers receive high-integrity carbon credits while contributing meaningfully to climate action."
VNV Focuses on Market Access
Mr. Mradul Choubey Senir manager Program Value Network Ventures (VNV) said:
"Our focus is to connect farmers with voluntary carbon markets through transparent project implementation, technology-enabled monitoring, and efficient carbon credit transactions. We aim to create a system where climate-positive agricultural practices translate into measurable financial benefits for farmers."
Way Forward
The stakeholders unanimously agreed that collaboration among research institutions, implementation partners, policymakers, and farmer organizations will be essential for the success of the programme. The meeting concluded with a commitment to undertake feasibility assessments, farmer mobilisation, pilot activities, training programmes, and the development of standard operating procedures to facilitate large-scale implementation across Haryana.
The proposed initiative is expected to strengthen sustainable agriculture, improve soil health, enhance agroforestry, increase carbon sequestration, and provide farmers with an additional source of income while supporting India's climate commitments.
